Lokah Samastah

Music by Kathleen Karlsen

Lyrics: Lokah Samastah Sukino Bhavantu

Meaning: This well-known Sanskrit chant is often translated as, "May all beings be happy and free and may my life contribute to the happiness and freedom of all." For me, this is the ultimate chant for peace and for the heart as the center of life. If we can all pray that all beings are happy and free, surely there will be peace in the world!

I wrote the melody for this chant for an evening of peace chants dedicated to protecting everyone from violence on a very volatile election day. This chant was also the final mantra for a chant-a-thon  celebration of winter solstice, intended to bring light and hope to the darkest day of the year.

My band and I also led this chant at the 15th Annual Festival of Peace at the Garden of 1,000 Buddhas in Arlee, Montana.
